Options for AzPA Certificate Programs

Program Overview

Arizona Pharmacy Association’s (AzPAs) Motivational Interviewing Certificate Program (MICP) is a practice-based activity designed for pharmacists and healthcare professionals in all practice settings. Through lecture and discussion, you'll explore the foundations of MI. In this one-day course, you'll learn step by step how to refine your communication style to increase positive outcomes with your patients. Through lecture, analysis, and discussion, you'll learn to use a compassionate, curious effort to elicit your patient’s own arguments for change.

Target Audience: Pharmacists and healthcare professionals in all practice settings

Course Purpose

  • Offer an in-depth look at the unique and essential aspects of MI and start refining your guiding communication style.
  • Gain competency in patient-centered counseling approaches that is central to MI, including accurate empathy, reflective listening, affirming, reflecting, and summarizing.
  • Learn to affirm the patient’s autonomy and reflecting their resistant speech with empathy.
  • Learn to reinforce and elicit change talk, while also responding in ways that reduce counter-change talk.
  • Develop a change plan at the patient’s pace that doesn’t trigger resistance.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles and nonpharmacologic treatment approaches for optimizing a person’s mental and physical health using MI tools.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  2. Review the evidence behind Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  3. Review the spirit & principles of MI.
  4. Learn to use the micro-skills (OARS) of MI in patient interviews.
  5. Outline the key concepts of patient-centered decision making.
  6. Implement MI tools and techniques to assist patients with behavior change.
  7. Identify change talk in patient interviews, learn how to assess readiness, and how to offer a behavioral menu.

How It Works

HOME STUDY:

Required Reading:

  • Motivational Interviewing in Healthcare-Helping Patients Change Behavior (2nd Edition); Rollnick, Miller, Butler (216 pages)

Patient Case Activity:

  • Using the patient case given, determine your approach to evaluate and assess the patient’s need for change.

 

LIVE SEMINAR:

The live virtual seminar includes an interactive didactic presentation as well as interactive role play training to practice motivational interviewing skills.

Examination: After the live seminar, each participant must complete an online examination and score 70% or better to receive a passing grade. There are # multiple choice exam questions on the exam.

 

POST SEMINAR ACTIVITY:

After the live seminar each participant will complete 3 patient cases utilizing MI skills. Participants will have 30 days to complete this activity.

Successful completion of the entire program will result in 15 contact hours of CPE credit (1.5 CEUs). ACPE UAN: 0100-23-001-CP

Initial Date of Release: June 22, 2023 | Expiration Date: June 22, 2026

Credits will be uploaded within 30 days from the live session date.

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded to participants who successfully complete all activity requirements:

  • Successful completion of the self-study component involves reading the required course materials and completing a patient case activity.
  • Successful completion of the live seminar component involves attending the full live seminar and passing the final exam with a score of 70% or above. In addition, participants must complete a final program evaluation.
  • Successful completion if the post seminar activity involves completion of 3 patient case activities.

ACCREDITATION

The AzPA Motivational Interviewing Certificate Training Program was developed by AzPA for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. The Arizona Pharmacy Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as providers of continuing education.

Refund Policy

Refund and/or cancellation requests must be made in writing to the Arizona Pharmacy Association office.

  • A cancellation request must be made at least ten (10) business days prior to the scheduled program
  • A cancellation fee will be charged as follows: AzPA Members ($50-student/$100-pharmacist) and Non-Members ($75-student and $150-pharmacist)
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellation requests made less than ten (10) business days prior to the scheduled program
  • You must submit a written request to cancel by email to education@azpharmacy.org

AzPA reserves the right to cancel any activity due to insufficient pre-registration. In this case, all individuals pre-registered are notified and issued a full refund.
