Program Overview
AzPA Immunization Delivery Certificate Training Program is an innovative and interactive educational program that provides pharmacists and student pharmacists with the skills necessary to become primary sources for vaccine advocacy, education, and administration. The two-part program reviews the basics of immunology, identifies legal and regulatory issues pharmacists must consider before starting an immunization program, and focuses on skills needed for practice implementation such as patient screening, vaccine administration, and management of vaccine related adverse reactions.

Course Purpose
- Provide comprehensive immunization education and training.
- Provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to establish and promote a successful immunization service.
- Teach student pharmacists and pharmacists to identify at-risk patient populations needing immunizations.
- Teach student pharmacists and pharmacists to administer immunizations in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
How It Works
This Immunization Training Program is conducted in two parts:
- Part 1- Home Study Program: 15-hour program to be completed before the Live Seminar
- Part 2- Live Seminar & Skills Assessment: 9-hour program conducted live in person or virtually
Note: The skills assessment is typically done in coordination with the live seminar except in the case of a virtual program will be conducted separately.
Learning Objectives
Part 1: Home Study Program
- For the following vaccine preventable diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hib, pneumococcal, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, zoster, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, meningococcal, HPV, polio, COVID-19, and rotavirus:
- Describe the causes, clinical features, and potential complications
- Describe the characteristics of the available vaccine preparations
- Identify the groups at highest risk for each disease
- Identify those for whom routine immunization is recommended
- Identify those for whom routine immunization is contraindicated
- Describe considerations for proper vaccine dose preparation
- Describe considerations for the proper administration
- Describe timing, spacing considerations between different vaccines and doses within a series
- Discuss proper storage and handling considerations for vaccine and diluent
- Discuss strategies for communicating with patients who have concerns about vaccines
- List the steps for administering currently available oral, intranasal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous vaccines to adults and children
Part 2: Live Program
- Evaluate a patient’s medical and immunization history to determine if the patient falls into the target groups for each vaccine based on the ACIP recommendations using the appropriate CDC immunization schedule
- Summarize the federal and state specific laws pertaining to vaccine administration
- Compare and contrast the signs and symptoms of pre and post vaccination reactions (localized, psychological, syncope, allergic, anaphylactic)
- Describe the proper management of pre and post vaccination reactions (localized, psychological, syncope, allergic, anaphylactic)
- Describe the appropriate use of emergency medications including an epinephrine auto injector and antihistamines in treating post vaccination adverse reactions
- Describe procedures for management of patients with adverse reactions to vaccination that constitute an emergency
Part 2: Skills Assessment (conducted in conjunction with Part 2 except in the case of a virtual program Part 3 may be conducted separately)
- Demonstrate proper intramuscular and subcutaneous injection technique.
- Demonstrate proper pre vaccination patient screening procedures
- Demonstrate proper post vaccination patient counseling and observation
Accreditation Information
The Arizona Pharmacy Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. AzPA’s Immunization Delivery Certificate Training Program is approved for a total of 24.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit (2.4 CEUs). The ACPE Universal Activity Numbers (UAN) for this activity are listed below.
Successful completion of the Home Study Program involves watching videos and passing the online home study assessment with a grade of 70% or higher and will result in 15 contact hours of CPE credit (1.5 CEUs). ACPE UAN: 0100-9999-22-139-H06-P
Successful completion of the Live Seminar & Skills Assessment involves attending the full live seminar, successfully completing the injection technique skills assessment, passing the online final assessment with a grade of 70% or higher, and completing the course evaluation. Successful completion of this component will result in 9 contact hours of CPE credit (0.9 CEU). ACPE UAN: 0100-0000-22-140-L06-P
AzPA continuing pharmacy education policy provides you with two opportunities to successfully complete the Home Study and Final assessments. Please note that you will not be permitted to submit the assessment a third time. In addition the current policy of the AzPA Education Department is not to release the correct answers to any of our CPE tests. This policy is intended to maintain the integrity of the CPE activity and the assessment.
To obtain a Certificate of Achievement and the full 24.0 contact hours of CPE credit (2.4 CEUs) for AzPA’s Immunization Delivery Certificate Training Program, the learner must complete all components listed above, and CLAIM credit for each component. Refund Policy
Refund and/or cancellation requests must be made in writing to the Arizona Pharmacy Association office.
- A cancellation request must be made at least ten (10) business days prior to the scheduled program
- A cancellation fee will be charged as follows: AzPA Members ($50-student/$100-pharmacist) and Non-Members ($75-student and $150-pharmacist)
- No refunds will be issued for cancellation requests made less than ten (10) business days prior to the scheduled program
- You must submit a written request to cancel by email to education@azpharmacy.org
AzPA reserves the right to cancel any activity due to insufficient pre-registration. In this case, all individuals pre-registered are notified and issued a full refund.
