Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is a quickly growing discipline focused on lifestyle interventions that evidence has shown to prevent, manage, and in many cases reverse chronic disease. The six pillars of LM, as described by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, are inherently interprofessional and pharmacists should be well-prepared to engage in the integration of LM interventions as part of a comprehensive therapeutic plan to help improve the health of patients. During this activity, a description of LM (as distinct from Integrative or Functional Medicine) and the evidence of its effectiveness is provided, along with an exploration of the role of Pharmacists in LM and practical methods for integrating LM education and awareness in the continuum of Pharmacy Education.

Insulin was discovered a little over 100 years ago and continues to be a cornerstone of diabetes treatment. Over the past decade, there has been a remarkable growth in insulin formulations fueled by biosimilars, alterations to improve pharmacokinetics, and higher concentration products. Interchangeable biosimilar insulins are also now being approved by the FDA. The speakers will provide a historical perspective on insulin formulations, review recent additions to the insulin treatment space, and discuss anticipated formulations such as once weekly basal insulin. There will be information on Arizona pharmacy law specific to interchangeable biosimilar products and common safety concerns that can occur with insulin treatment. The goal of the presentation is for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to walk away feeling more knowledgeable and empowered on how to approach insulin in their practice.

This session will review the potential causes and risk factors for anxiety, insomnia, and depression in older adults. Physical health, social isolation, loneliness, loss of loved ones, and barriers to access healthcare contribute to common mental health disorders. Co-morbid disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, and depressive symptoms are also linked with substance use and suicidal behaviors. Screening for anxiety disorders, depression, and suicidal risk helps to identify patients who would benefit from counseling, interventions, and referral to providers who are trained about mental disorders. Pharmacists are important in assessing risk factors and recommending interventions to improve the quality of life for older adults. Lifestyle changes, education about nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options, and encouraging patients to take an active role in their health will help to manage common mental health conditions and improve their overall well-being.
