Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacists should be better able to:

  1. Identify current statistics and future projections for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the southwestern US, nationwide, and worldwide.
  2. Recognize obesity as a chronic disease and utilize medical nutrition therapy as well as pharmacological approaches to support weight loss goals in patients with T2DM.
  3. Compare and contrast current lipid guidelines and treatment recommendations to improve lipid control in patients with dyslipidemia.
  4. Review the evidence and results from cardiovascular safety trials related to antidiabetes medications and their role in risk reduction for macrovascular complications and nephropathy.
  5. Summarize available drug classes and updated treatment guidelines for managing T2DM, which include efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action.
  6. Evaluate the evidence of novel pharmacotherapies and apply best practices to fine-tune individualized treatment regimens that include SGLT2s, incretins, insulins, and combination therapies.
  7. Summarize the 2017-2018 Legislative Session and how it impacts the profession of pharmacy.
  8. Summarize the 2017-2018 Opioid laws that went into effect in Arizona
  9. Learn how to use the CDC Immunization Schedule to make vaccine recommendations for patients with chronic conditions.
